Lazy Morning - 7th November 2016

Yesterday we stayed in the cottage until mid-day due to the less than beautiful weather, and today we did similar but for an extra hour; but, that meant we could sit with our feet up with hot drinks and watching Youtube. A lovely relaxing morning.

Now the forecast wasn't great but we decided that we would take the risk and head up the coast. Starting in Staithes, then up to Saltburn and finally down to Skinningrove for the big bonfire that they hold each November; they had built a boat to be burnt on the beach with all the associated fireworks. It had been moved to today as a result of all the winds that we had seen over the weekend. So around 1pm we headed out of the cottage and up the coast road north.

We arrived in Staithes around 1:45pm and headed down the steep hill to the harbour area; you don't have the option other than to park at the top of the hill as only residents are allowed down the cobbled road to the village itself.

The sea was out so we spent 30 minutes or so looking around the beach and the harbour, before heading back to the main street looking for shelter as the rains had arrived. And we were in luck as we found a lovely little vintage cafe called Dotty's where we enjoyed hot drinks and afternoon cakes, passing the time until the weather had cleared. I must admit that I was a little jealous as although my lemon and poppy seed cake was lovely, it was only a very thin slice and Donna's cream tea looked lovely.

After walking back to the top of the hill we jumped into the car and continued up the coast. The problem now however was that it was starting to get dark and by the time we reached Saltburn the low light mixed with the dark rain clouds meant that our walk along the beach was limited; in fact we spent the first 10 minutes sat in the car wondering whether to get out or not. But we did and were glad we did so as we spent an hour walking on the beach and along the pier and I managed to get a few low light shots on the tripod. Donna had hoped to find some smooth glass on the beach but it was too dark to find anything, it was hard enough to see where to walk where there were no lights.

And then the rains came again, so we abandoned our plans to go to Skinningrove for the bonfire as it was still two hours until it started, and there was a very good chance that we would just end up soaked anyway. So we set off back the 40 miles or so to our cottage; yes a wet day but still a very enjoyable one.
