Help the Aged - 8th November 2016

When we booked this holiday at Low Moor Farm Cottages, what we didn't know at the time was that my mum and her friend Sheila had booked a 5-day break in Scarborough at the same time. So as a little treat, Donna suggested that we ask them if they want to go to Whitby for a few hours whilst they were on holiday. And today was that day.

It looked on the forecast that today would be one of the better days of the week, and they were sort of correct as in the morning there was quite a bit of light rain, but thankfully the afternoon was dry with a few breaks in the clouds.

We picked mum and Sheila up in Scarborough at 10am and headed off up the coast with our payload of pensioners. By around 10:45am we were parked up and ready to part our ways, leaving them to go off and explore Whitby and we would go on our 6.5 mile walk and then meet back near the swing bridge around 3pm.

Now we had planned a couple of walks out on the moors this week, but due to all the rain we'd had, we changed our minds and looked for something less muddy. And although we had done the round-trip from Whitby to Sandsend and back many times, we would again head up the beach.

On the way up to Sandsend we couldn't walk on the beach much as the tide was in and some sections were completely blocked off, so it was't until we got about 1/2 mile from Sandsend that we could drop down onto the beach and start looking for small rounded pieces of glass amongst the pebbles; Donna is planning to do a little 'arts and crafts' with various pieces of washed up glass. We (well Donna mainly) found plenty.

Before heading back we took a seat and tucked into Donna's homemade soup, we had hoped for a drink at Sandside Cafe but it was closed, as were the other cafe's in Sandsend - obviously not a lot of weekday footfall this time of year.

Our walk back took as down the beach as the sea had receded slightly, still a little rough and on the odd occasion the surf would chase us up the beach, but it made for an interesting walk back. When we arrived back in Whitby we soon met up with mum and Sheila, and by 3:45pm we had them safe and sound back at their hotel. We had done our good deed for the day.
