Walk: 8.9 miles and 1900ft of ascent
As I sit here writing this brief blog, my back aches, my shoulder and neck feel strained, and I can hardly keep my eyes open. Have I done 12 rounds with Mike Tyson, no, a walk up onto Kinder with Malc. Over the last few years I've been up onto Kinder a few times without any problems, however today was very different. Not sure if it's because I've not done much ascent for the last couple of years, or whether today was just one of those 'bad days', but I really struggled. Don't get the wrong idea though, it was still a great walk with a good friend.
All started well, we parked up in Edale and headed along the Pennine Way, through Upper Booth towards Jacobs ladder, a couple of miles or so. A steady walk, although a very hot one as the temperature was in the mid-20's, and it was so humid. In fact, it wasn't long before I had to put my cap on as the sweat was running down into my eyes.
As we arrived at the bottom of Jacobs Ladder we took the opportunity to have an early lunch by the stream running down the clough and under the bridge. After 20 minutes or so it was 'time', the long haul up the hill. It was here that I really struggled. Malc went up the hill like a young goat off for it's lunch, but I had to keep stopping every now and again. To be fair though, Malc kept stopping for a breather with me; after all we weren't in a rush.
My rucksack was really uncomfortable for some reason, I kept adjusting it but to no avail. However, the views all the way up were stunning; the Vale of Edale is such a picturesque place. Makes it all worth it.
After reaching the highest point we headed east along the edge of the plateau, taking in the amazing rock formations that are scattered all along this edge. As a route it is challenging as it is very rocky in many places and you are forced to clamber up and down the rocky path as it winds it's way along, and up and down the edge. Great exercise though!
We had planned to make the descent down Grindsbrook Clough, however we bumped into a small group who had come up it and told us that it was very muddy and wet in patches, so a quick change of plan and we continued along the edge to Ringing Roger where we picked up the path back down to Edale; and relief as we reached the car.
We really enjoyed the walk, even if it was very difficult at times. It did make me realise my limitations though....
And if you noticed that the start of one paragraph has two words with no space, well I have no idea why as Blogger has been doing it on my blog since I changed the blog background, and I have no idea why. There was a space there when typed, but uploaded 'tis no more'
