Gunby Hall - 25th June 2016

For quite a while now Donna has fancied a china cabinet for the dining room, nothing too expensive as it is will be a project, so as long as it's the right shape and size, condition isn't that important. Obviously it can't be falling apart! And by luck would have it one appeared on eBay, and all looked good especially the price. It was collect only, and over in Boston so not a million miles away; 65 to be exact.

So, Donna pressed the 'buy now' button and after checking that it would be available today we were off on the 90 minute trip across into Lincolnshire. The place was easy enough to find, a lovely house behind large electric gates and the seller was actually the son at the house who sells old furniture from a container at the back of the property. And the cabinet was spot on, in really good nick for the price so we loaded it into the car and set off.

It would however be a waste of a day just going over there for the pick up, but where should we go? After a few minutes of throwing possible destinations into the mix we decided to head off up the coast to Skegness; neither of us has been there for years so although not a destination of choice for us for a day out, we thought a couple of hours by the sea would help make a day of it.

Around an hour later not too far from Skegness we approached a roundabout, a brown sign said 'Gunby Hall', and it only took us a split second to change our destination and head into the National Trust estate. We parked up, pulled out our NT passes and after being greeted by a couple of lovely gentlemen we were off around the place.

Now to say that the gardens were stunning would be an understatement, they were arguably the best we've been to. Not on the grand scale such as you would find in the 'glory houses' like Chatsworth, but the variation in colour, the coverage, the avenues, it was a stunning walled garden. Just the sort that Donna wold love to have; if she didn't work that is as it would be a full-time job in itself. She would love to while away the summer days tending to the flora.

We spent about 90 minutes simply enjoying the beauty of our surroundings before heading around the estate and on into the grand house. The house was really quite homely for somewhere so grand, you could just close your eyes and imagine family life going on around you, the paintings adorning the walls helped tell the story. And the guides dotted around the house were very forthcoming and very knowledgeable which isn't always the case.

By 4pm it was time to head off back home, 75 miles across Lincolnshire through a mixture of sun, blue skies, clouds and rain. We arrived home around 6pm, quickly ate the fish and chips that we'd picked up and then Donna was off out up to the rugby club for a get together, and me and Jake settled down in the lounge for 5hrs of boxing on Box Office.
