Holiday number three of 2016, and a place that neither of us have ever visited before. The nearest we had come to Anglesey was our week in Conwy in January this year, so we were both really looking forward to finding new places to visit and new things to see.
It's a fair drive to get here, around three and a half hours in total with the picturesque drive over the Woodhead Pass, the urban crawl around Manchester and then the long stretch past Chester and along the North Wales Expressway before crossing the Menai Bridge to this mystical island. Our plan was to stop off just south of Conwy at Bodnant Garden. We came here in January, but this time around we were really looking forward to seeing the gardens in bloom; in January whilst the landscapes were still stunning, the lack of colour gave the whole place a more muted feel.
But, after making the short journey south from Conwy we entered the large car-park to find it 'packed to the rafters', cars were parked over verges, in fact anywhere there was space. It was after all a lovely day so you can't blame people visiting, but it wasn't for us. So, we turned around and headed back up the road towards Conwy and then onwards to Anglesey.
We hadn't eaten, so before doing some shopping at Waitrose in Menai Bridge we drove a little further along the coast and found somewhere close to Beaumaris to sit and eat our packed lunch, a nice spot on a shingle beach overlooking the Menai Straight. Now time to set about getting our shopping for the week.
Our arrival in Red Wharf Bay was a little earlier than planned, it was only 2:30pm and we couldn't get into the cottage until 4pm so we headed down to the small 'front' at the bay and had a refreshing drink sat by the bay. Donna had a double gin and tonic, and just a pint of diet coke for Steve the chauffeur. We passed a good hour just enjoying the sun and the views, having short walk in the area then headed up to the cottage. Now time to unpack and get ready for the week ahead.
