Last night was a late one, we headed out to the lighthouse at the end of the peninsula and then back to take some photos of the Harpa so didn't get back to the apartment until around 10:30pm, and by the time I had uploaded my photos and done my blog it was well after midnight when I flopped into bed.
So today we had planned a bit of a walk around Thingvellir National Park, we had visited there last October but it was more of a stop-off on our modified golden circle tour so we only managed to see the tourist areas. But today we planned to go a little further and do some walking. Also, on route we made a slight detour down to the banks of Lake Pingvallavatn to the same place we went last time. And to our amazement about 100m of the lake from the bank outwards was frozen, so some great photo opportunities.
We arrived around 11am and just as a couple of tour buses had arrived so the place was fairly busy, however we weren't there for a quick snapshot visit; we donned our walking gear and headed off initially towards Oxafoss as we missed that last time, then out into the middle of the park where we saw nobody at all, peace and quiet. However, for the first hour or so it kept trying to rain, but then it teemed down for the next couple of hours so by the time we had finished our 6 mile walk we were sodden. Donna's coat had managed to keep out the rain, but my dam had been well and truly 'bust', even my inner down jacket was rather damp! We hadn't even managed to find anywhere dry to eat our packed lunch so ended up sitting on a rock in the rain eating our sandwiches.
But, it was still an enjoyable walk, and a very enjoyable return to the warm car with our heated seats on. The drive back was around an hour, we stopped off at Alafoss to check out the factory shop and it's various attractions but we arrived at 4pm, and what time do they close, you guessed it 4pm!
But never mind, we continued on to Reykjavik and picked up a pizza on the way back to our apartment as we were both starving. Whilst the price of the pizza's were rather steep, so was the flavour. In fact it was one of the best ones I've ever had which is high praise indeed as one thing I am a bit of an expert in is rating food.
We just couldn't resist ending the day with a walk around some of the centre of Reykjavik, we circumnavigated the lakes of Reykjavikurtjorn before heading up to the famous Hallgrimskirkja church to take some photos. Our last port of call for the day.
