Well we woke up this morning to snow, wind, and rain, and lots of it; and unfortunately it wasn't an April fool! It was expected to be honest as keeping an eye on the forecast had prepared us, and then the email yesterday advising us that our glacier trip couldn't go ahead due to the forecast winds really sealed the deal.
On the plus side though it meant that we didn't have to get up and set off early, and as luck would have it we had also received an email from the owner of our current accommodation letting is know that we could leave at any time as there was nobody using it until next week. So, no point in going anywhere in this weather, just a lazy morning watching the rough seas and relaxing before our 3hr drive to Reykjavik.
We left just after noon and headed back over the hills, along the lowlands, over fjords, under fjords and 3hrs later we were back in Reykjavik. To tell the truth it was actually 4hrs later as we'd stopped off in Borgarnes for a cup of hot chocolate, and of course there had been the customary stops for photos.
On the day that we arrived in Iceland we realised that Donna hadn't packed her medication, we don't know where they were as they were out ready to pack, and her emergency supply would only last 3 days. So, we had arranged for Jake to get them couriered out here. However, there had been a delay so it was too risky to hope that they would suddenly turn up on Saturday so we made a visit to see a doctor in Reykjavik. The service was excellent, we paid around £17 for the visit but went away with a prescription safe in hand.
After unpacking back at the apartment we headed out for something to eat, and as it was Friday night and everywhere was packed, we grabbed a burger from the famous Bullan and ate it in the car overlooking the harbour. They were just as nice as we remembered.
The sun was now setting so we jumped back into the car and headed out to the lighthouse at the end of the peninsula near the Grota nature reserve and spent a good 30 minutes enjoying the setting sun, and hoping that tonight we might be lucky enough to see the northern lights again. It was however a little early and not quite dark enough yet. Our last stop of the night was next to the Harpa concert hall where we took a few photos of the stunning building. And as it was now 10pm, maybe time to go back to the apartments and settle down after a long day.
