Walk: 9:45am to 12:15pm, 4.5 miles and 580ft of ascent
A steady walk after a relaxed morning was planned for today, but when we woke up and saw the gorgeous blue skies we decided that it would be a shame to waste the great weather so headed out fairly early; ok not exactly sunrise but to be out for 9am was good for us.
And 26 miles later we parked up on the road about 150m up the road from the Fox House Inn; one of our favourite eateries in the good county of Derbyshire. Or is it Derbyshire, I'm not sure exactly where the boundary is?
Our route was one we had trodden in the past, so nothing really new, but it's a nice steady one with just enough incline to keep your heart pumping and some warmth in your body, and considering the cold breeze blowing across the hills the heat produced was very welcome. We took the path along the top of Burbage Rocks, and to say it was muddy would be an understatement. I'm sure we added about 1/2 mile onto the walk with the amount of weaving around muddy puddles we had to make. Thankfully there are plenty of rocky outcrops up here to ensure that the path isn't just one long mudslide.
As we reached the far end near the bridge where you cross over if you are continuing to Stanage, we could see how busy it was getting. The road near the bridge was covered with cars, and the ice-cream van was parked up ready to entice all the kids out with their parents for what is a great area to start the little ones on their hiking adventures.
The main path back below the rock face is very popular, it's flat and easy on the feet, and part of the Sheffield Country Walk so not exactly mountaineering. I say that, but the rock faces on this part of the peaks is where many people cut their teeth in the sport of rock climbing. So many rock faces here of all sizes and gradients, and swarming with people of all sizes and gradients, sorry I mean ages.
By noon we were making our way up the road back towards the car and to the end of a lovely morning's walk. One advantage of getting out earlier is that you still have the afternoon ahead of you to put your feet up and chill out - after all it is Sunday.
