Walk: 10:45am to 4pm, 8 miles
We've done this walk many times before which may seem a little pointless to some, but as each walk is a little different due to the changeable Yorkshire coast weather, it never gets boring, Plus today, although nobody would promote the fact that it brings any beauty with it, we were able to see up close the work currently being done on the £7m coastal defence project at Sandsend. It just seems so surreal watching construction vehicles driving up and down the beach, dodging the waves as they roll in as if they are trying to sweep them away.
Whilst the section along the beach is a little over 2 miles each way, once you add on the section right to the far end of Sandsend, and the walk that we have down to Whitby front it soon pushes the miles up to the 8 mile point, and as we're are both currently on a bit of a calorie cut-down and weight loss push, the exercise is a welcome bonus.
It was again a lovely day, in fact by the time we'd walked down the steps of the apartment I was removing my waterproof, and in fact I only wore my t-shirt and thin fleece all day, and at points even two layers felt too much; is it really a week into December?
The first mile or so along the sea-front was on the beach and the promenade, but then we had to head up to the main Whitby to Sandsend road as the tide was quite a way in and as it was close to high tide we didn't want to risk getting a little wet. As soon as we reached the road it was noisy, and dirty, the latter being a result of all the construction traffic using this stretch of road. As we walked the next mile or so much of it was through and beside the construction area, just so much going on as they try to complete the work before next Spring.
We spent quite a bit of time on and around the beach, taking lots of photos of course, and just enjoying the fresh air and the sounds of the sea. Sandsend is a lovely place when the weather is set fair. As it was now lunchtime we headed into our favourite Sandsend cafe, Sandside. I had a gorgeous Sandside Smokey, comprising smoked haddock in a cheese and egg sauce with wholemeal bread, and Donna just fancied poached egg and beans on toast. She was a littler stunned though at the amount of beans, there must have been a full tin on there!
As we'd rather missed our walk along the whole of the beach, we toyed with heading along the edge of the surf and bordering on the construction area to walk back, but in the end sense prevailed and we returned by the same route as we'd walked a few hours earlier. As we arrived back in Whitby we detoured slightly as Donna wanted to visit Bobbins at their new premises on Skinner street, however she was a little disappointed. It was nothing like their old set-up in Whitby's old east-side. Now just time to grab a nice loaf of crusty bread ready for tea; Donna's gorgeous home-made soup.
