You could tell that I'd had cheese yesterday as last night I had a rollercoaster of dreams which left me feeling a little drained when I woke up this morning, and with a 'banging' headache. Therefore, even though it was going to be a lovely day we decided to have a steady day around Whitby with lunch planned at our favourite place to eat (and drink) in Whitby - Rusty Shears.
After a lazy morning relaxing in the apartment with Jeremy Kyle and Homes under the Hammer we headed off around mid-day, walking up the hill to the abbey. No plans to go into the abbey again; in fact I don't think it's open today, but nice just to walk on the top of the cliff around the perimeter of the abbey and through the grounds of St Hilda's church. Lots of photo opportunities. With the sun struggling to get particularly high in the sky this time of year, it gave a lovely glow on the stone of the abbey and church.
After spending some time around the church we headed down the 199 steps into the old east-side of Whitby with it's narrow cobbled streets and quaint shops, then over the bridge and out onto the west pier where we spent around 30 minutes just walking around taking photos and enjoying the sea air. I know it's obvious to say, but then the weather is this nice it really makes the world seem a better place. The last two holidays we had in Whitby were almost wall to wall with fog, but this time we've had a stunning week so far. Yes some rain, but it's been during the night so well out of harms way.
It was now around 2pm so we headed up the hill to Silver St and down to Rusty Shears. Our intention was to spend a couple of hours there, have some lunch and a good few drinks, maybe getting a tad tipsy if the mood prevailed. Donna's favourite Rusty Shears drink, fig gin and tonic, and the organic cider for me. However, the food and drink were of course exceptional as always, but we didn't spend the afternoon there as the room with the comfy sofa's wasn't in use due to it being he quieter part of the year so we just didn't feel as comfortable as we were hoping.
It was now around 3:30pm and the light was fading fast so as much of the resort winds down late afternoon this time of year we headed back up the hill to the apartment for an evening in our cosy home from home.
