Kiplin Hall - 11th December 2015

So to the last full day of our week in Whitby, a week that just seems to have flown by. We have been so lucky with the weather as it has been a lovely week with lots of sunshine, some showers but most were during the night or when we were in the car so didn't affect us in any way. We've had a really great week, walked a good few miles, had some nice lunches out and nice meals back at the apartment, took some great photos, roamed around lovely country houses, rambled on beaches, and spent lots of evenings just relaxing in the apartment; simply because we could.

Yesterday I awoke feeling a little under the weather, and today Donna had a bit of an upset stomach so we deferred our walk out onto the Moors and I perused the Welcome to Yorkshire website for somewhere to go for the afternoon, and somewhere ideally with a Christmas twist. I came up with Kiplin Hall near Northallerton, a house with a 400 year history, and for the weekend it was open with a 'Dickens of a Christmas' event. I would keep it as a surprise for Donna until we got there. I phoned before we left to check if photography was allowed in the house as some don't allow it, and unfortunately this was one of the places where it's now allowed.

It wasn't on the doorstep, in fact a 1hr 20 minute drive which was made longer as we got stuck in a queue of traffic going through Northallerton, a place we also found to be a bit of a bottleneck on our return journey. We left just after 10:30am and arrived at the Hall around noon.

We were expecting to be able to use out HHA passes to get in, but we weren't able to as it was classed as an 'event day', which fall outside of the membership (I should have known from previous experience) so we had to pay £8.30 each to get in; not really the end of the world though is it?

Our walk around the house was an enjoyable one, with some rooms that looked really cosy, however they didn't feel it, as a result of the lack of heating the house was quite cold! Some lovely artwork on show, gorgeous pieces of intricately built furniture, and my favourite pieces were some stunning Victorian dresses that they had on show. My favourite rooms were the two 'stripped out' rooms which were left as they had been used by forces personnel in WW2; such a raw feel to them.

Before leaving the main building we enjoyed turkey, stuffing, sausage and cranberry baguettes with a side salad. We had contemplated spending an hour walking around the grounds, but we hadn't expected the temperature to have dropped so drastically so weren't really togged up for it, so just headed over to the small Christmas Gift Fair that was in one of the buildings. To be honest it was smaller than I was expecting, just a few stalls and much of the stuff you could buy off the internet, however one stall was selling knitted goods and Donna bought a lovely buttoned scarf that you just pull over your head.

I spent 10 minutes taking some photos outside the house whilst Donna sat in the car out of the cold wind, then we set off back around the northern perimeter of the North York Moors back across to lovely Whitby; a bonus was the lovely sunset behind and beside us as we drove back. Roll on our next visit....
