Winding Down - 16th October 2015

Our last full day of a really enjoyable week in beautiful Iceland, and although we still had half a tank of petrol, after having driven around 750 miles already this week we wouldn't be going far today. Before setting off to Iceland we'd read the blog of a young American lady who lives in Iceland; Kiki was her name, and amongst her excellent reviews of places all over the island she mentioned a gem of an area within Reykjavik, a place called Ellioaardalur, so we thought we might make a visit there for a couple of hours.
However, although it was only around 15 minutes drive from the apartment, and easy to find, it was a different matter finding paths to walk the area! You would think it should be easy, but we drove around and tried parking up in three different places but just couldn't find any paths. The only time we found what appeared to be a path was in the car-park of a locked up building, but there was a lockable barrier at the entrance and we didn't want to risk getting locked in so we gave it a miss. After about an hour we made the decision to give it up as a bad job and head somewhere else.
Yesterday we'd seen a large billboard map of Hafrnarfjorour whilst on our road-trip, so as it was just 10 minutes from Reykjavik we headed south down the coast to have a look around. But, although it looked lovely on the pictures, it didn't quite look the same when we got there. Admittedly we didn't give it much of a chance as no sooner had we arrived than we turned and headed out of town.
Our morning hadn't been the most successful part of the trip, so we decided to park back up at the apartment, grab a quick sandwich, then head out around the harbour and to the relatively new art installation looking back at the city. It was about a 30 minute walk to get there, and on the way Donna had an ice-cream at Valdis, I'd had one earlier on the way along the main shopping street. The selection was varied and there were so many flavours; Donna had carrot cake, ginger, and coffee with caramel....scrummy but she found having 3 scoops a little too much.
We had a slow walk back to the apartment, taking in a few shops along the way and arrived there at about 4pm where we set about packing our cases ready to head back home tomorrow. Our plan was to have a couple of hours chilling and then go find something to eat. We'd planned to go to the restaurant that serves soup in a hollowed out loaf, but in the end couldn't be bothered to get ready so I popped out and ordered take-away pizza from the same place that we'd had them last night; Eldsmidjan. I had to head back to the apartment for 45 minutes before going back to collect them as it was a busy Friday night, but they were just as lovely as they were 24hrs earlier.
So, our last night and tomorrow we plan to go and have a coffee and view the city from the viewing platform at Perlan before heading to the airport at Keflavik and then back home. Will we be back, you can bet your bottom dollar we will, or maybe even your Icelandic Krona.......
