Well we've been waiting for this day since I booked the trip back in February, then announced it to Donna in March on her 50th birthday; Donna has always wanted to visit Iceland with the hope of seeing the Northern Lights. So fingers crossed.
Our trip began at 8:30am as we headed off to Manchester airport, arriving at Jetparks car-park 1 at around 10am; a stress free drive across. By 10:30am we were in the airport just in time to drop off our bags and head through security. Donna had been assured that the clips in her skull wouldn't set off the scanners, but you guessed it, they did. So after a check over with the wand and a body frisk all was ok and off to find something to eat in the departure lounge.
No sooner had we had an all-day breakfast washed down with coffee and sparkling water, it was time to head to gate 10 for boarding. And well done easyJet, we left on time at 12;30pm. The flight was a good one with the pilot announcing that we would get there about 20 minutes ahead of schedule, so after turning our watches back one hour we landed around 2pm local time.
Another stress free swoop through customs, security and bag collection we headed to pick up the rental car. There was no sign of a desk for the rental company Sixt so I asked at one of the other desks and they advised that someone from Sixt would come into arrivals for us. As we had landed early we were a little early for the car as it was due at 3pm, but nobody came. After 2 phone calls to the company eventually someone came to collect us and take us over to the car collection point on the edge of the airport where we had to wait in a queue to fill in the paperwork.
Anyway, by 4pm we were on the road....the right hand side of course. It always takes some time to get used to being sat on the left, changing gear with your right hand and driving on the right, but after a couple of days all will be good. We arrived in Reykjavik around 45 minutes later and although we did get a little lost looking for the apartment, it wasn't much of an issue so by 5:30pm we had parked the car and were shopping at Bonus.
As the supermarket closed at 6pm we had left our unpacking until getting back to the apartment, and at around 7:30pm we headed out to have a look around. We headed along the busy main street through the old town, the bars and restaurants were packed, and we paid a visit to the stunning Harpa which looked amazing all lit up. We had a look around inside and it's a magnificent building.
We'd waked around for over an hour and decided to head back to the apartment and grab a snack on the way, which we did at Reykjavik Chips where they sell.....just chips. But they come with a choice of topping and are all hand cut with skins. Rather tasty. Now a couple of hours relaxing back at the apartment with a couple of glasses of Baileys on ice. And the trip begins....
