Aqueous Alnwick - 15th September 2015

So, what do we do and who do we believe? BBC weather said rain all the way through to tea-time, whereas Accuweather said rain until just after mid-day then some sunny breaks ; so who would win the battle?

We tossed our dice and  went with Accuweather, so headed off to Alnwick to visit the famous Alnwick Castle; we would save Alnwick Gardens for another time when we could be more sure of fine weather! We arrived just after 11am and after a short walk within the castle walls decided to head off to the cafe for a cuppa to give the rain a chance to stop; but unfortunately it didn't. Never mind though, we had the state rooms to visit so could spend an hour or so in there.

As expected I couldn't take photos, so my camera was switched off as we walked through the impressive front door. It was a pity that we couldn't get any photos of the absolutely stunning interiors, but we went away with some great memories. There was a lovely knowledgeable guide in there who was so enthusiastic telling us stories of people who had lived in the house, the history behind, and the work done to create the beautiful ceilings, and stories behind other rooms in the castle. A really interesting and informative 10 minutes or so.

After exiting the state rooms it was still raining so we headed down into the town to find something to eat, and after a short tour of the town centre we found a lovely little cafe called The Pantry. I had the large breakfast and Donna the small one, and they were reasonably priced, very well cooked and very tasty. And as we'd not been naughty much this week, we followed the main meals with a sweet. I had Ginger Crunch and Donna had Malteser Cake; both very moorish but you couldn't eat much as they were VERY rich. A great little find.

Our next stop was a small shop called The Emporium that Donna had sought our after finding it on Tripadvisor, and as Donna does love a nice scarf, she bought three! And at last the rain had stopped so we headed back up to the castle and spent an hour or so walking around the grounds, visiting some of the small museum areas and taking in the view from the ramparts. So it wasn't a wasted visit after all.

By around 5pm it was time to to head back. A short detour to Sainsbury's to take back some clothes that we'd picked up on Friday on our way here, and then the 15 mile drive back across country to the cottage.
