Just a short trip out today. After working for the last 7 days including two 12hr days at the weekend I just fancied some fresh air, so a run to the coast. And as Cleethorpes is the shortest drive it won the day; or more like half a day.
It's never been our 'resort of choice' as there's not a great deal there to see, I would always describe it as functional if anything, and it serves it's purpose of providing sand, sea, slot machines and fish and chips. Our preference (are we snobs?) is for somewhere with a little more that just function; we like harbours, piers, boats, history, cobbles, spa's and the like.
Anyway, we set off around 11:15am and arrived around 12:30; parking in the swimming pool car park at the bottom end of the promenade. The weather was rather good if I do say so, and the golden sands gave off a lovely warm glow. One thing you can say for Cleethorpes is that the sand is a lovely deep colour, none of that pale stuff that looks like the sand you use on your block paving.
We headed the mile and a half north along the promenade, past the part refurbished pier, and right to the top end of the resort before turning around and heading back down again. Half way back along the front we took the road parallel with the front as we were looking for somewhere to eat. Donna had found a place on Tripadvisor that had decent reviews, but in the end we gave up looking once we had determined that it was somewhere on the back-streets. We weren't that hungry anyway.
So by around 1:15pm we were back at the car, and as the fog and cloud had now enveloped the resort we decided to head back home. On route back, and as we travelled through deepest darkest Grimsby we stopped off for a McDonalds; ok not exactly 'seaside fodder' but you do at least know what you're getting. Back down the motorways and by around 3pm we were back in good old Dinnington.
