Well our last full day of the holiday, and a week on North Yorkshire wouldn't be the same without a trip to the coast. And as Scarborough was only 30 miles away along the A170 we decided to head east for the sunshine. One of the main reasons for going was the fact that we could park at Scalby Mills and walk all the way to the old swimming pool and back to get a good walk in, so although the walk is a flat one it's one which is surprisingly an 8 mile return journey so enough to burn lots of calories.
It was a lovely start to the day on the weather front, and it would continue that way until the end of the day. In fact, we can't complain as we had expected a week of mixed weather based on forecasts, but it has actually been great weather. As it was market day in Helmsley we had a quick visit before we set off to the coast, but to be honest it was a little disappointing so we didn't hang around that long and didn't buy anything.
We arrived in Scarborough around 11am and parked up the hill from Scalby Mills, an area we've parked in a number of times before when we've gone to Scarborough with the intention of taking in a long walk. It took us a little over an hour before we arrived at the harbour area and as we always do when in Scarborough, we walked down the pier to the lighthouse and sat there for 20 minutes just soaking up the sun and the sea air. A great time and place to think about, well nothing.
After walking back onto the front we stopped for some tea and toast at a cafe we've been to a couple of times before, then continued down around the south bay to where the old south bay lido used to be, it closed in 1989 and the site now hosts the Stardisk.
It was now time for our return journey and a visit to Scarborough wouldn't be the same without a visit to the Harbour Bar, and of course a visit to the Harbour Bar wouldn't be the same for Donna unless she had a Knickerbocker Glory. Plus, as it's only 3 days to her birthday she classed it as her ice-cream birthday cake. Without candles, but it's the symbolism that counts.
Now for the last leg of the walk and back around the headland and along the north-bay back to Scalby Mills and time to take off our boots and get some fresh air to our aching feet. And our timing was perfect, the North Bay Fisheries opens at 4:30pm and we arrived there at 4:45pm so our plan for a fish and chip supper had come to fruition. We drove down onto the sea-front and ate our food whilst watching the waves role in and the surfers fall in, I'm sure that's not what they are trying to achieve though. Now just the 30 mile drive back to the cottage and a cosy last evening with our feet up.
