A Day of Two Halves - 11th January 2015

Well last night was certainly a lot colder than Friday night! Friday night I had half of my body outside of the bedding even with the window open, but last night I stayed well covered up as the bedroom was much colder. That said, I did sleep much better than Friday so the cold couldn't have been that bad.

Over breakfast we discussed the day ahead and decided to split it into two halves, with this morning being taken up with a walk along one of the many trails in Dalby Forest. We drove over to Dalby when we were staying near Sutton Bank in November, but never made it onto one of the trails as we decided to park at the visitor and walk to the start of the trail we had chosen, but what we hadn't taken into consideration was the map scale and the start of the walk was actually 3 miles away resulting in a 6 mile walk there and back!

So this time we drove the few miles from the cottage to the north-east corner of the forest and parked at the Bickley Gate car-park, then picked up the Jerry Noddle trail. A walk of 3 miles over good tracks and through woodland. The main reason we chose this trail was that half way along you get a great view along the Upper Langdale Valley.

We did get a little confused though as we couldn't find the start of the walk and assumed that the path we could see was the start; unfortunately it was actually a part of the cycle trail. We walked for a couple of hundred yards, but after Donna had been side-swiped by a speeding mountain biker we realised that the path for walkers must be elsewhere. Thankfully we found it pretty quickly and so were on our way.

The route itself wasn't too challenging, and the views over the valley were stunning. Ok we didn't have the gorgeous blue skies of yesterday but it didn't really spoil the views. The walk only took us around 90 minutes, so by the time we got back to the cottage it was noon. Our plan now was to put our feet up for a couple of hours before setting off out again.

Around 2pm we headed into Scalby for a carvery at the Scalby Manor, we both fancied a roast dinner and it's not really worth the time and effort that it would take to make one back at the cottage. I did make a bit of a mistake when I ordered our food though; I though that at weekends it was one size only so when the guy behind the bar asked me if I wanted a large one, I said yes. However, when we went to get our meat and the chef sought out the 'big' plates for us Donna looked at me aghast; I then realised what I'd done. Never mind though, lots of meat to eat :-)

After eating we headed back to the cottage again to have an hour and a cuppa before setting off back into Scarbroough. So really I lied, it was a day of three thirds! We arrived on the sea-front around 4pm and parked at the southern end of Marine Drive. And of course we headed straight to the Harbour Bar for our first ice-cream of the weekend. As always Donna had a Knickerbocker Glory, and I had a large Neopolitan cone. 'Bloody lovely' as always.

Our last action of the day saw an hour walking around the sea-front and of course a walk out onto the end of the pier below the lighthouse. And of course I had the camera with me, not that it was particularly easy taking photos in the dark and with a strong wind. We tried a few with long exposures and both of us trying to hold the camera still, and I took a few using a high ISO. Well we'll see when I get home how successful they were.

And lastly back to the cottage for our traditional end of day 'feet up in the cottage', a great way to end the day.
