Rusty Shears - 16th September 2014

Another foggy morning in Whitby, just as the MET Office had predicted so 10/10 for them on this occasion; mind you, with the computing power at their disposal you would expect them to get it right once in a while. They did however predict that it would clear later in the day and that we would be bathed (ok I exaggerate a tad) in sunshine later in the day. That never materialised!

So, as I didn't roll out of bed until 9am I'd planned a lazy morning around the apartment, then into Whitby for lunch at Rusty Shears followed by a walk up the coast to Sandsend and back. I ran the idea past Donna as she had been out of bed since first light, and she agreed, therefore the day was planned. So, a few hours reading, watching a little TV, listening to Radio 2, and just relaxing whilst waiting for the fog to lift....which it didn't.

At around 12:30 we left the apartment and headed down the hill into Whitby. I decided to 'go naked' with my camera today, leaving my selection of zoom lenses packed away in my camera bag, I would go back to basics and just take my 50mm prime lens with me. Our aim of eating prior to walking was to change Whitby was surprisingly busy, so we fought our way through the crowds to make our way to the sea-front, headed down onto the beach and set off along the coast.

Within around 45 minutes of setting off along the sand our plans were in tatters. The moisture in the air coupled with the relatively mild temperature made walking very uncomfortable. I was creating enough perspiration to bathe an elephant, not a nice experience, so we turned around and headed up the hill to path taking us along the top of the cliffs back towards the town.

Around 30 minutes later we were back on the edge of town, and as it was likely that the main lunchtime rush was over we weaved our way through the back-streets to Rusty Shears and planted ourselves in their beautiful walled garden and ordered lunch. Donna went for garlic mushrooms on toast washed down with sparkling water, and I had a sort of turnover made with sausage meat, black pudding and apple, accompanied by a potato salad and considerable fresh leaf salad. And as a treat I also had an organic pear cider with mine.

We only knew that this place existed as Donna had found it via Tripadvisor, it's not somewhere you would just come upon.as it's hidden away in the back-streets. And to say Donna had found a gem of a place would be an understatement; the food was stunning; the place was both a visual and taste treat. We will definitely be back later this week.

Before heading back to the apartment we walked down to the harbourside and headed to Teare Wood's ice-cream parlour, another find by Donna on Tripadvisor. This isn't hidden away, and we have walked past in many times before but never really taken any notice of it. They also do food, but as we'd eaten we can't comment on it's merits but what we saw looked nice. However we had come for one thing, ice-cream. Donna had a Whitby Wow which was very fruity with various ice-cream flavours, fruity sauce and pieces of fresh cherry, and I went for Chocolate Fudge which was very sickly but very nice. They are proud to advertise that their ice-cream is made from their own local Jersey cow.

By the time we arrived back at the apartment it was around 4:30, and in fact we'd walked around 4.5 miles on our little jaunt so we can claim to have done our exercise for the day. Neither of us had much inclination to head back out, so showers for both of us, comfy clothes and our feet up for a relaxing evening.
