Fig Gin - 19th September 2014

Well our last full day of the week in Whitby, and the lovely The Lookout apartment that we have stayed in again has been our heaven away from home. We've spent plenty of time relaxing in the apartment during the week, and why not? A holiday is a break from the norm, it doesn't mean you have to be out and about 10hrs each day! Ok the weather hasn't been great, if you've been reading my blogs I have tended to mention fog on a few occasions. Well this morning there was no fog, yes it was very grey and dull, but also quite warm so just a shirt and trousers for me.

We decided to stay local today and just have a walk around Whitby. Our first port of call after walking down into town was to head for the east pier. I always find it odd to talk about east and west in Whitby as you automatically assume north and south when on the coast, but if you check out a map you will see why it's east and west. We've been on this side of the harbour many times, but it's always a little more relaxed than the more busy west pier, and on the end of it you will find the old lighthouse standing proud, the newer one is on the west pier. I call them piers, but they are actually more of a harbour wall extending out into the sea.

After walking back down through the cobbled streets on the east side of the Esk we crossed the swing-bridge and headed up towards Pannett Park where we enjoyed an hour or so looking around the grounds of the park. We did consider venturing into the museum and art gallery but decided not to. I must admit that I was put off  by the two staff sat outside the door smoking. Not exactly sirens enticing you in.

Our next port of call was Rusty Shears for an extended lunch; one that extended to 3hrs. We dined there a couple of days ago and were impressed, so the plan was always to come back again one day this week. Donna had the Garlic Mushrooms on toast again, and I went for the Pork Pie and Mushy Peas. And don't think for one minute that it's anything like your typical supermarket pork pie!

During our visit I had a few bottles of strong organic Pear Cider, and Donna had her fair share of Fig Gin with tonic; doubles of course. They have about 20 types of gin on sale there, so there's plenty to tempt your palate if you like a tipple. We also had a dessert, I had Key Lime Pie and Donna had a Sloe Gin Cake with a Plum topping. And just to finish off our luxury lunch we both had a Hot Chocolate Heaven before setting off back down through the town.

If I'm being honest I just wanted to put my feet up now. So, after Donna made a detour to pick up some wool and I recorded the swing-bridge opening for a yacht to enter the marina, it was back to the apartment for an evening reading and watching TV; Oh, and of course typing up this blog.

Oh and here comes the fog again....
