My Horse, My Horse, My Kilburn for A Horse - 7th August 2014

Well what a lovely morning for the last day of our holiday. In fact, it was that nice we decided to start the day with an hour sat outside the cottage just soaking up the sunshine in the tranquil surroundings, just thinking back over the great week that we'd had. And yes I did bare my ample chest again; thankfully we are about 35 miles or so from Whitby so no risk of the whaling industry starting up again.

Around 11am we set off in the car to the NYM visitor centre about a mile away at Sutton Bank, we took the car as the route there means walking in the long grass next to the road as there are no footpaths near the road. And as mentioned in a previous report this week, the traffic doesn't exactly dawdle along the A170. We paid our £4 and headed along the Cleveland Way, around the perimeter of the gliding club to the Kilburn White Horse. About 1.5 miles of flat walking with stunning views over the Vales of York and Mowbray. To be honest, you can't see very much as the horse is so large and drops away down the hillside, but just being close to it was quite special.

The path soon joined the lane from the A170 down to Kilburn, so we headed north and stopped off at the gliding club for a drink and a snack. Today was a little different to Sunday, the queue's for taking off were like TK Maxx on Boxing Day. Whilst there we noticed three people that were in the Helmsley Spice last night, one of them was setting up two considerable video cameras; clearly not the home movie type. Donna asked one of the guys from the gliding club and he told us that they were finishing off some filming; Ellie Harrison and Adam Henson of Countryfile fame (amongst others) had been there on Monday filming for the second season of BBC's Secret Britain. We'll be keeping an eye out for it airing in January.

After our short break we headed back the mile and a half to the visitor centre and got back in the car, our next step on our schedule was to visit Byland Abbey. We did detour slightly so added on a few miles as we wanted to get a good view of the White Horse, however around 20 minutes later we pulled up in the car-park at the Abbey Inn; just across the road from the abbey itself.

So as we hadn't had lunch, we ventured into the inn and ordered some food and a drink; and enjoyed it in the sunshine in the beautiful garden at the Inn. It was the sort of surroundings where you could just sit all day with an ice cool drink by your side. But we couldn't - we had an abbey to visit.

I don't think we really knew what to expect of this abbey as we hadn't read much about it, and from the Inn it didn't look much. But, we were pleasantly surprised as it's a substantial site with lots to see. Even a small museum at the bottom of the site telling you all about it's history, links to other abbeys and how they built it.. We spent a good hour there before heading back to the Inn to pick up some cake to take back with us to have this evening at the cottage.

Our last stop of the day was a slight detour into Helmsley to pick up a few bit to have for tea when we got back to the cottage. We did what we had to do but didn't really spend much time there even though it's a lovely place to visit, as to be honest we were both very warm and just wanted to have a shower and put our feet up. And as I type this up, that's exactly what we're both doing...
