Oh no, it's Market Day - 23rd June 2014

It was the first full day of my week off work and the weather was set fair, but, maybe a little too warm to be walking up hills in the Peak District. Sunny just as we like it, but sadly no breeze which doesn't really fit the bill for us if we want to go walking in the hills.

So, after some consideration we decided to head for Bakewell. We've been many times before, but it's always a nice place to meander around the streets, check out the shops selling old 'nick nacks' for the house and garden; last time we managed to pick an small antiqued cabinet which was great for the hallway as a lamp table, and for just £60.

About an hour after leaving home (it's a 70 mile round-trip) our progression slowed considerably - had there been an accident? Well no there hadn't, by the time we eventually reached the town around one and a half hours after leaving home we discovered that it was market day so the place was heaving. After around 20 minutes trying to find somewhere to park we gave up and headed away from the town.

As we were in the Peaks it was a shame to waste the visit, so instead we drove through a few stunning villages on route to Castleton where we'd park up and have a walk around the town; as with Bakewell we've been to Castleton many times so there wasn't much chance of anything to surprise us, I mean if you've done all the walks in the area, been up to Peveril Castle and visited the caves you've exhausted the main attractions; well worth a visit though if you've never been there. What did surprise us though was that in marked contrast to Bakewell it was like a ghost town. If there hadn't been the obligatory groups of school-children there on field-trips then it would have been empty.

We had a walk around the back-streets for an hour or so then lunched in a cafe. Great food, but unfortunately as it was right next to the road through the town it was VERY noisy as the traffic passed by, particularly the lorries taking the short cut from Sheffield across to Manchester. Never mind, you live and learn and next time it will be lunch up one of the quieter back-streets.

So not a wasted day in the end....
