Damp, dreary, grey - but less about my reflection when I looked in the mirror after arising this morning. It was our last full day of the week and we had hoped for a change in the weather but alas no. So; no rush to go out early and we decided to just relax for the morning, put our feet up and see what Jeremy Kyle had to say.
By around 12:30 we had exhausted day-time TV, surfing the internet and reading magazines so decided to head out. Our first task before going anywhere was to head down to Ebor Jetworks as the ear-rings that Donna had made did not fit the same as the one's she had made in November. The posts were shorter which made them tighter, so the hope was that they could come up with some sort of resolution. Sarah at Ebor asked Donna to return around 5pm and she would see what she could do.
So, we headed off the few miles down the coast to Robin Hoods Bay for a couple of hours. In the past we would have walked it as it's around 5 miles along the Cinder Track, then got the bus back to Whitby. However the need to ensure that we were back before Ebor Jetworks closed meant that today we would journey by car.
After parking at the top of the hill our first point of call was the Swell Cafe about half way down the hill. We had been there in November and enjoyed our lunch with a sea-view from their 'non-smoking' terrace (smokers have to sit behind the cafe if they choose to eat al fresco), however today's lunch would be taken inside as it was just a little too 'fresh' out there.
We then headed down to the bay as the sea was as far out as we can ever remember seeing, so it provided us with the opportunity to ramble around the beach looking in rock pools, admiring the rock formations and just taking in the fresh sea air. That said, to me the latter is like having gas and air in the dentist chair. The great outdoors just makes me so tired....
Having kept close watch on the time, we needed to head back up the steep hill before our parking ran out, but it didn't stop us exploring some of the old alleys and back-passages that are hidden from sight if you just take the main road down to the sea. Many are now quaint holiday rentals; god knows how you get your luggage there as you can't park nearby.
We arrived back in Whitby, parked the car in our parking space and headed down into the town. Sarah at Ebor Jetworks had managed to make Donna some replacement ear-rings, but unfortunately the amber just didn't quite match the pendant so we chose to get a refund. Not really much more that Ebor could have done as getting an exact match is never easy with natural products; better luck next time we come.
Before heading back to the apartment we headed towards the pier, then up onto the heights of west-cliff where we sat for a while on a bench overlooking the harbour and with views out to sea. It was a little bracing up there but great just to sit and watch the world go by. Our route back took us down some of the back-streets of Whitby where we hadn't been before, and as with Robin Hoods Bay we were amazed at the alleys and passages that we'd never noticed before. We picked up Cod & Chips on the way back to the apartment, our last taste of the sea before heading back home tomorrow. Another enjoyable week was almost over.
