Mulgrave Castle - 30th March 2014

Walk: 11:15pm to 3pm, 5.7 miles and 426ft of ascent

Well a double celebration today; Mothers Day and also Donna's birthday. So the day started with Donna opening all of her cards and putting them on display in the apartment, and also opening the gifts that she had with her. My present was yet to be made as we planned to get something from Ebor Jetworks in Whitby, but I did sneak along a small selection of 'stocking fillers' so she had a few surprises.

So, we arrived yesterday to mist, and we awoke this morning to mist. Looking at the weather forecast we need to get used to it this week it appears, lots of low cloud and dull conditions; but hey do we really care as WE'RE ON HOLIDAY.

Last time we were her in November we went to walk around the Mulgrave Estate to seek out the old castle, however found that it only opens on certain days. So this time around having checked out the dates and safe in the knowledge that it would be open, we jumped in the car and headed towards Sandsend. We had considered walking there but that would have added around an extra 5 miles to the walk; something shorter as the first walk of the week is much preferable...well for me anyway.

We parked up the coast road from Sandsend, and the first thing we noticed was that they now have new parking meters raring to go as soon as they are unleashed. It make you wonder how many people will now look for somewhere free to park when they visit Sandsend and block up some of the backroads.

So down the hill we headed to he start of the walk at the outlet of East Row Beck, then headed inland through the estate. Tracks were good as expected so it made good walking, and even though it was grey and still a little misty it quickly became quite clammy as we had left the seas breeze behind us. Along the first section of the route we came to a saw mill with some lovely coloured logs and planks at all stages of ageing, giving a real feel of autumn, even though it's spring.

After an hour or so we came to Mulgrave Castle, and I was quite surprised to see the ruins that were there as I expected little more than a few stones in the ground. Ok it's not quite Skipton Castle, but well worth a visit if you're in the area. We spent 20 minutes or so looking around the ruins before heading back. Our route back took us on a slight detour over the beck just to break up the route. We did however have to cross back towards the end of the route and actually walk though the beck as it crossed the path; the stepping stones were under water and slippy, so we had to go a little deeper in the water. Whilst not exactly paddling, it was deep enough to cool down your feet - and thank goodness for Goretex lined boots.

Back up the hill to the car and just a trip to Sainsbury's for a few essentials before we headed back to the apartment. A nice steady walk to start the week.
