Whitby to Sandsend - 10th November 2013

Walk: 10am to 3:30pm - 8 miles and 450ft of ascent

Day one of our week in Whitby and what a beautiful day it was. Looking out of the window of our apartment at Whitehall, over the marina and harbour out towards the sea was a beautiful vista. We've been to Whitby so many times over the years but never actually stayed here, so when Donna found the Driftwood apartment it was too good an opportunity to miss. And a beautiful apartment it is.

Before we set off on our walk we meandered around the cobbled streets perusing the many wares on offer as shops and stalls were jus opening up, then headed down to the new cenotaph near the harbour to pay our respects with the other people there for the 2-minute silence. Whilst it wasn't a large gathering and their were no speeches made, or even bugles to sign the start and end of the 2-minutes, it was still a timely reminder of why this is such an important time of the year.

We then headed down to the West Pier as the seas were quite choppy, however the end section of the pier was gated off; even though there were some people along it fishing. Not sure if they had climbed the gate or were key-holders and therefore access was a privelege. You could still however get a good view back to the harbour to see the waves streaming up the sands, gently cleansing the beach.

After walking down the cobbles to the beach we turned left in the direction of Sandsend: around 3 miles walk along the beach. When I say along the beach, actually today we couldn't do the full distance due to the fact that the sea hadn't receded yet so in some areas it was still lashing up against the rocks. It was a lovely walk, blue skies and sunshine with a cold breeze blowing in from the sea. A perfect day for walking.

By the time we reached Sandsend I was really ready for a sit down and a drink. We went into the Sandside Cafe; mainly because they had an outside deck that catered for us non-smokers. Just how many times do you want to eat outside and have to put up with someone else's smoke? Thankfully not here. After a hot Mocha and Cheese on Toast (Donna had a Fentimans Dandelion and Burdock) we were ready to head back.

As much of the beach was still in the shade we headed up the hill and back along the road on our return route, passing by the golf course before dropping down the path to pick up the incline to take us to the top of the promenade. This proved a good choice as we passed an ice-cream van and I could have one of those lovely Gothic ice-creams....Blackcurrant and Licorice....just gorgeous. Donna went for the Cinder Toffee cone with a flake, again after stealing a lick I can confirm that it too was scrummy.

Just a walk back though the streets of Whitby, then over the bridge and up the hill to our apartment. A relaxing last couple of hours of Sunday afternoon and Waitrose Beef Brisket for Sunday lunch.
