Walk: 10:15 am to 4pm (including lunch & shopping) - 8.3 miles and 630ft of ascent
It's probably getting a bit boring now talking about the lovely weather, well I'm not bored of it so I'll wax lyrical about it again: another lovely sunny day with hardly a cloud in the sky and just a slight breeze to freshen the air. There I've said it.
The day didn't start that well to be honest as we had to change our plans for the day and wasted time driving to Sandsend. The plan was to park up in Sandsend, then take a wooded walk inland through the Mulgrave Estate and check out the ruins of Mulgrave Castle. However, after parking on the main road just out of Sandsend, togging up in our walking gear and reaching the entrance to the Mulgrave Estate we were told that it was closed??? Apparently this time of the year it is only accessible on certain days. We didn't even realise that the walk we had planned would take us through private land. So, back to the car and we headed back to Whitby.
Last night Donna had read that around this time of year you can see Salmon Leaping in the River Esk as it passes through Sleights. So, we parked up back 'home' and headed down to the marina to pick up the path that runs beside the train-track into Whitby.
On route to Ruswarp we passed under the viaduct that used to carry the train-line from Scarborough up the coast, now all it carries above it's magnificent arches are walkers and cyclists as the they travel along the Cinder Track. After reaching Ruswarp we had to decide whether to take the Esk Valley Walk to Sleights, a section we'd walked before and knew that it would be muddy, or take the B1410 for the 2 miles or so to Sleights. After getting muddy yesterday we whimped out and took the road.
We arrived in Sleights about half an hour later, and started to look for somewhere on the river where we might have a chance of finding leaping Salmon. However after searching for around 20 minutes our mission was to no avail. We could only see a small weir where there might be a small chance of 'catching some action' but we couldn't get anywhere near it; in fact we just couldn't get anywhere near the river anywhere. Never mind, it had been worth the walk just to be out in the fresh air in the lovely weather - have I mentioned the lovely weather?
So, about turn and we took the same route back to Whitby, arriving back at the marina just over an hour later. We hadn't eaten so we continued down through the town to the harbour, our destination was the Quayside Restaurant. We hadn't eaten there but it has won many awards so we thought we'd give it a try. However, we arrived literally just after it had closed for the day - bad timing or what! So, a little further down the road for Cod & Chips from another award winner - The Magpie Cafe.
After filling our tummies (ok mine would take more than fish & chips to fill it) we headed back over the bridge to the old town as Donna wanted to drop into the Ebor Jetworks again to order some ear-rings to match the pendant we'd bough couple of days ago. They didn't have exactly what Donna wanted, but the lady owner and designer said that she'd make them up and we could collect them tomorrow. How about that for service? Now just the 15 minute walk back to our apartment....
