Around 9 months ago some ladies who are members of Dinnington Rugby Club decided to start up fitness sessions at the club, the idea was spawned by Tina Cannadine. It became a success and more people came along, so Tina arranged for someone to come and coach them in rugby fitness and Chris Ross joined their sessions with the fitness became based around basic rugby skills. As the word spread, the sessions expanded with 30-35 ladies of all ages and sizes coming along.
So a few short months ago someone had an idea about putting a TAG Rugby tournament together, and in conjunction with Olly Dixon the local RFU Representative that's exactly what they did. And although a few teams dropped out late on, the tournament went ahead with 6 teams including two from Dinnington, two from Barnsley plus Doncaster and Castleford.
Although we all love the sun during summer, I'm sure that all the players on Saturday would rather have had it a little cooler, a little more breeze, and maybe even a few showers. You know, like a normal english summer.
So around 11am on Saturday, two pitches had been marked out across the 1st XV pitch and the ladies took to the field to do battle. They all showed great levels of fitness and stamina, especially the ladies from Dinnington who's age range went rather higher than the rest of the teams. A few in their 40's and even one over 50 I believe, but to see them perform you wouldn't think it.
Most of the games were fairly evenly matched, and the penultimate game saw the two Dinnington teams pitched against each other, with the team in the hoops needing a win to reach the final. It was a close game, but in the end they squeezed through to set themselves up with a final against Barnsley.
Barnsley's team of 'young uns' must have through that the trophy would be theirs, particularly after they opened up a considerable lead. However the Lodge Lane girls showed how much it meant to them and came back strongly just doing enough to win the final. A well deserved victory.
The award ceremony took place with the trophies having been supplied by the event sponsor Richard Groocok of Rumours Hair & Beauty, and after well deserved showers the ladies had their own presentation afternoon with awards being given to Nicky Cook, Sarah Hall, Jane Hanson and a 'special' award to Louise Abbott. And of course a few gallons of alcohol were downed by the rowdy bunch.
All in all a very successful first TAG Rugby tournament at the club, and one which I'm sure will grow next season as more teams realise what they missed.
