Oooh, What A Grey Day - 23rd June 2013

Well what a soggy day; At least we can't say that we weren't warned as the forecasters got it spot on for the East Coast. They said that it would be grey and wet with the odd ray of sunshine, and that's exactly what we got.

Although we knew what to expect, we still chose to take a gamble and head off the 30 or so miles up the coast to Saltburn-By-Sea. It's a place that we'd always wanted to visit after discovering last year that the locals had taken to knitting figures and decorating the coastal village with them, particularly on the Victorian Pier which I believe is the last pier on the Yorkshire coast so worth a visit in it's own right.

We headed up the coast firstly stopping at Sainsbury's in Whitby to make sure that we got hold of some potatoes for our dinner later in the day, without risking the limited Sunday trading hours and going back to the cottage with just a large plate of Sirloin Steak to eat. Our route skirted around Whitby town centre and we headed out towards Sandsend on the coastal road up the coast.

As we passed through Sandsend the front was packed with visitors which was great to see, however that was soon to change as the black clouds rolled in and by the time we were heading up the hill just to the north of the village the rain started to come down heavy. We gave it another 10 minutes or so, and just short of Staithes we decided to abort our journey and head back: The rain was just pouring down with not a break in the clouds to be seen.

Luckily as we arrived back in Sandsend the rain abated a little, so we parked up in the car-park at the northern end of the village and headed into the nearest cafe for a warm drink and a slice of cake. It was a little pricey but very nice and I had contemplated having a snack whilst there but with a jacket potato with Tuna & Mayo priced at £6, maybe not.

As we'd paid the minimum parking fee which was for 4hrs we were determined not to get straight back into the car and head back, so donned our jackets, grabbed the rucksack and camera and headed down to the beach. It continued to rain and on a number of occasions we sought shelter in natural 'caves' in the cliff but managed to get a great look at the cliffs that are famous for Jet and fossils. In fact we briefly spoke to a Geologist from Bolton who had driven over to collect some rocks. Looking at all the different coloured layers really gave you a geological look back in time, and in fact although I have not idea what they are, I did find some odd looking formations in the - see below.

After around an hour we headed back to the car, we'd contemplated walking a little further on the beach but it was a losing battle trying not to get drenched.so the lure of the car was too much and we decided to just head back to the cottage to have a relaxing afternoon and a lovely steak meal for our Sunday lunch.

After watching the athletics for a couple of hours I was starting to get itchy feet, mainly due to the fact that the sun had started to break through so I wanted to take advantage of the break in the weather. I made it clear (well hinted a lot) to Donna that I fancied a trip to the coast, so we got our gear together and 15 minutes later were parked on Marine Drive. But would the break in the weather last?

Well it did for a while, although the skies threatened the rain held off for nearly an hour and to be honest the black clouds added to the atmosphere of our short walk. We managed to walk along the beach to the Spa, stopping for an ice-cream from the Harbour Bar on-route - only take-away cones at this time of night but very enjoyable. I set the tripod up above the Spa and took a few photos of the threatening sky before we set off back to the car. However, about 5 minutes later we had to seek shelter as the heavens opened and it looked like it was set for the night.

We sat for about 10 or 15 minutes, and even though the rain hadn't completely stopped we set off for the car to head back to the cottage. We arrived back at around 9:45pm - a worthwhile little soiree out.
