This whole weekend had been well planned and organised in fine detail by all parties involved, so the various people who had worked so hard would at last get their rewards.
So lets firstly talk about the 17th, and what an occasion it was. Our friends Kate and Kenny from the local rugby club at Dinnington, who had been a couple for as long as I can remember, were ready to tie the knot. Now for anyone who doesn't know them, well what can I say about them that doesn't seem too flattering. They are a couple who can always be relied on if you need any help, they always put others before themselves, nothing is ever too much trouble for them, they have such a strong and loving family, they are just such genuine people and really good friends.
So as well as putting the recent Dinner Dance together, Donna and Kate had spent lots of time together with other good friends and family, including the mad woman of Kiveton Louise Abbott arranging the wedding day. On the morning of the 17th Louise had taken Donna for her hospital visit and then they both visited John Lewis Sheffield for their make-up doing before heading back home ready to set off to the hotel.
Then at mid-day we jumped in the now 'dressed' car and headed off to the hotel just south of Sheffield - The Sitwell Arms and checked in. Much of the next few hours was spent going through all the last minute preparations that are such a joy for all involved at a wedding, and then the clock struck 3:30pm and it was time for the ceremony. It all went really well, lots of tears in the eyes of the ladies present (and a few of the men) and the next thing we knew it as 2am Saturday morning and the previous 14hrs just seemed to have rushed by. Kenny and Kate were now Mr & Mrs Aston-Parry.
We had to get up early on the Saturday morning (I made sure that I was only 'tipsy' throughout the wedding day) as we wanted to spend some time having breakfast with the wedding party, then it was a short stop off to drop Louise's son Jack off at his dad's, and then time for us to hit the road to Scarborough for the rugby games later in the day.
We arrived at Scarborough Rugby Club at 11:30am, in plenty of time for the first game which kicked off at Noon. What we weren't aware of was that they had 55mm of rain overnight, so many of the club members had been out since around 6:30am with forks and sponges trying to dry out the pitch. Thankfully their efforts were rewarded as the games went ahead. This was the third time that the game had been played between a Yorkshirerugby.net UK born team and a Yorkshire League overseas team, and yet again it was a very entertaining game but this time around the UK team captained by Gaz Burns ran out winners.
It was then time to retire to the clubhouse for a drink and a chat before the next game kicked off at 3pm - the main event being the County Championship game between Yorkshire and Durham. The second year that SRUFC had hosted one of the prestigious games after last year's match between Yorkshire and the old enemy Lancashire.
The first half didn't set the world alight, and at half-time the crowd were wondering if the game would ever come to life. Well thankfully someone had given the Yorkshire lads some Red Bull during the break as they improved and ran out fairly comfortable winners.
After such a busy couple of days we decided not to hang around at the club, but to head off to the hotel we'd booked for the night, unpack and then walk into Scarborough to get a bite to eat. It was about a 30 minute walk until we reached our destiny The Scarborough Tandoori where we'd been on a few occasions before. This time it was absolutely bursting at the seams so they had to open up the lounge above to get us and later guests a table. We weren't going to complain as the lounge above was really tastefully decorated and far less noisy than downstairs, and sitting next to the window it allowed us to keep tabs on everyone that passed by...and there were some odd sights.
The food was excellent as always, however there was one blot on their copybook as they served up Tandoori Chicken as Donna's main course when she had actually ordered Chicken Tikka. Then when we came to pay, all they said was "well it's the same price", however saying that was like a red rag to a bull to Donna and after she 'politely stressed' their mistake, the price of the main course was removed from the bill.
The rest of the night was taken up by a long stroll all the way around Marine Drive back to the hotel, then at last our heads hit the pillows after a very busy couple of days. We were a little limited as to our choice of accommodation (remembering that I'm a bit of a snob) as we only wanted 1 night, so in the end we stayed in a lovely small hotel called The Headlands - the room was a little small but it was clean, and the breakfast was very good. All you want for one night I suppose.
The next morning after breakfast we headed down to the The Spa and parked the car, then headed onto the sea-front for a few hours. It was a little cool as the sea-fret was rolling in, with the sun struggling the break through. Only on rare occasions in those few hours did we feel the warmth of the sun on our faces. We spent some time sat out near the lighthouse, just as we often do. You can just sit there without a care in the world soaking up the view of the sea and the coast beyond - well if you could see it of course! It was surprisingly busy considering the time of the year and the weather, it was good to see so many families on the beach.
And of course we can't visit Scarborough without going to the Harbour Bar - our favourite ice-cream and snack parlour. Donna had her favourite delicacy - a Knickerbocker Glory, and I ravaged down their largest 'cone' called The Mega. Olympic Torch sized and with 5 or 6 different flavours of ice-cream right down to the bottom of the cone.
Around 2pm we decided to hit the road, getting off before the tea-time traffic and back to start loading on all the weekends photos. And 4hrs after arriving back at home they were loaded on and uploaded to Google What a great weekend....
