A Quiet Day - 20th September 2012

Well not really much to say today so I'll keep it short - but hey it's a blog so I feel obliged to put something in when we're on holiday no matter how boring it is :-)

A very wet day was forecast so our return to summit Pen-Y-Ghent will have to wait until we next come back to the Dales to stay - we didn't fancy a soggy last day. We stopped short of the summit last year (or the year before?) when it became too windy - that said, some army trainees weren't having too much trouble running up and over it! Now I know why I never joined the forces.

Having had a quick look in some magazines and on the internet we decided to head to Skipton and go on the 1hr canal boat ride, then have a look around the shops and pay our twice yearly visit to Ultimate Outdoors to see if they had any good offers on, and more importantly anything at all in XXL.

After arriving and paying for 4hrs parking, we headed to the canal basin to find that the 1hr cruises weren't on today as it's 'off-season' - so the main reason for going there was no more. As we'd paid for parking we spent about 90 minutes perusing some of the smaller local shops - and the beautiful Craven Court Shopping Centre before going to Ultimate Outdoors. And, unfortunately more disappointment as there wasn't a single item of clothing in XXL in the aforementioned outdoor shop.....gutted.

The trip wasn't a complete waste of time as we got Donna a lovely necklace, and also a couple of gifts for my cousin's 50th birthday - big 'pink party' in Saturday night.

We headed back up the A65 to Settle, parked the car up and did some shopping - firstly at the local deli Serendipity - ok the website isn't finished yet, but it's well worth a visit if you're into home-made pastries and cakes, plus all the other food that you'd expect to see in a deli.

Before heading back to the cottage we ventured into the square, and for the second time this week had a look around Three Peaks Gallery - some great local photos many in beautiful frames. I was drawn to one that I'd seen earlier in the week, and my darling wife Donna bought it for me - well worth the £119 price tag - me that is. In all seriousness the photo was a stunning monochrome/sepia photo of a tree near Winskill Stones, and Donna buying it for me meant a lot. If you're ever in Settle I would recommend a visit there.

Before going back to the cottage we had lunch in the Talbot Arms, we were too tempted after having their ground beef burgers when we arrived last Friday - now to try them for lunch washed down with a speciality Ale. Just not sure now what we're going to do with the food we bought from the deli! Well tomorrow and another week in the Dales ends, so back down to South Yorkshire and back to reality. Lets just hope our 20 year old son has looked after the house...
