Not a walking Blog this time, ok it involves walking but you get what I mean - and a relatively short one at that as I had toyed over whether to bother but in the end gave in as I wanted to fill an hour or so.
Our trip to Worcester wasn't a 'tourist' trip as we were travelling down to watch a rugby match in the evening - a pre-season friendly between Premiership Worcester Warriors and our team, Championship side Rotherham Titans. We were never going to win the game, but I had expected us to be more competitive than we were - a 50-10 defeat :(
So, as the drive down there was over 110 miles we chose to get there mid-afternoon with the plan to have a saunter around the center, grab a meal and then off the the game. We made good time and were parked next to the county cricket ground just after 3pm. And within 10 minutes or so we were wishing that we'd made a day of it - neither of us had been to Worcester before and we were surprised at what a stunning city it was, so much architecture there, lovely old buildings, beautiful river walks along the Severn - plus the weather was great which always shows places in their best light.
We walked along the river for a while, then headed over the bridge into the built up part of the city, wandering back down the river to meander around the outside of the cathedral - we didn't really have time to make a proper visit so decided to save that for another time.
Even the main shopping area that we walked around was illuminated by old buildings, now being used for purposes other than what they were built for, but mostly looking like they would have done many years ago. As we were walking along the street we came across a Pandora shop - so as a small treat I bought Donna a new 'charm' for her bracelet, she deserves it.
As 5pm arrived we decided that we should look for somewhere to dine before heading off to the outskirts of Worcester for the rugby. We ventured back down to the river and sat outside a lovely bar. Now being a proud Yorkshireman I'm happy to spend a few pounds, but need to see value for money. And £5.50 for a pint of coke and a tonic water isn't what I call value for money. Plus, £14 for a Caesar Salad - no thanks so we had our drinks and left.
We walked a little further along the river's edge and went into a pub that had a good review on the internet - a lovely comfortable pub with 'normal' priced drinks, but when we asked for the menu were told that food wasn't on until 6pm - damn, we didn't have time to wait.
So we ended back up on the main street and purchased a Subway to take and eat in the car-park before the game. Not exactly a 'meal out' as we had planned but needs must. We arrived at the ground at around 6:30pm, enjoyed our stomach filler and off the game...
