Walk: 11:30am to 1:30pm - 4.5 miles - 705ft of ascent
Due to work and other commitments it's been about 6 weeks since we last went walking, however thankfully less than 2 weeks until we have our regular visit to Victoria Cottage in Settle. That said, we're half-way through dog sitting for my brother who's gone with his family to Greece, so for the last few days I've been getting around 4 miles per day in around the local area.
Today though, we decided to take 'Tricky' for a trip into Derbyshire and headed for Monsal Head, for a short walk to Millers Dale and back. Tricky is a young Staffordshire Bull Terrier - around 9-months old I believe, and an absolutely gorgeous dog. It seemed so different taking him for a walk when I think back to our Black Labrador Dexter who sadly passed away a few years ago. Dexter would pull you out of the door whatever the weather and would never want to stop walking whereas Tricky is certainly a little different when it comes to rain - you have to force him out of the house and he keeps stopping and looking back giving you the 'sad face' (it did make me chuckle a little), but once out he loves his walks, young dogs just have so much energy.
We set-off over to Monsal, a journey of just over 30 miles, and parked in the car-park near the hotel - then heading down the path to the viaduct. The first adventure was to head in the Bakewell direction taking in the newly opened Headstone Tunnel as the last time we were in the area the tunnels on the Monsal Trail were still closed. We ventured down to the end before turning back and walking over the viaduct - they've done a really good job in getting this open, even if you get a little wet at times as the water trickles in parts of the roof.
We headed along the trail for about 1/2 mile before crossing to Upperdale and then heading to the mills at Cressbrook - gloriously converted apartments and houses in a beautiful setting. We followed the path and crossed back over to the trail just as we reached Millers Dale, before heading back towards Monsal Head. We were both surprised as to how busy the trail was considering that it was a Monday - good though to see it getting plenty of use, money well spent.
Before setting off back we had a drink outside the old converted stable at the hotel - now a bar that serves good meals. Tricky was getting a little excited at the 'talent' on show around the other tables - soooooo young and very excitable - oh yes, and so is the dog. The drive back took in a bit of a detour as we headed over to Fox House for a bar meal - well when I say bar we sat outside on the newly extended seating area. I'm sure if will be much better when the cement dust had cleared away - the tan and white dog looked like he'd gone grey!
We enjoyed the meal as we always do, I had a large home made Pork Pie - lovely pieces of shredded pork in it, with seasoning and small chunks of potato - plus salad and home-made picallilli - yummy. A Caesar Salad and then herb coated Chicken breast for Donna - a great way to end the trip.
