Walk: 1:30pm to 5pm - 6.16 miles - 680ft of ascent
Well firstly, a bit of a 'cock up' on the photography front. When we got back home and I was loading the photos on the PC, my camera battery ran out part way through so I had to re-start with a new battery from where the download had got up to. However...I must not have started at the right point and didn't load any of the photos from this walk. But the problem is that I then re-formatted the memory card before checking that everything was transferred - lesson learnt! Thankfully my wife had some photos for this blog, but no online album from me this time.
Anyway, to the walk. The weather forecasters were correct, and the area saw a lot of showers in the morning so we stayed in the apartment until around 12:30. But we can still hold claim to the good weather, as again the forecasters were correct and the afternoon was sunny intervals - so no more rain. No idea why we wear waterproof coats - we never need them....now will I regret saying that in the future?
The drive took us up the coast towards Whitby before cutting across through Ruswarp and back down the Pickering road to Goathland. No direct routes across the Moors so a bit of a long way round. We parked up in Goathland (the home of 'Heartbeat' for those that don't know) and were ready to set off at 1:30pm.
We followed the road in a south-west direction as it exited the village, and then took the path down into the valley with West Beck running in the bottom - the route taking us in the direction of Mallyan Spout. I'd seen this on the map, but often when you see a waterfall marked, it's small and a disappointment, however this wasn't. I didn't realise that this was going to be a 70ft gem hidden away in the trees running into the beck. A great setting and plenty of photos taken...but no use if you then delete them :(
Our plan was to head up to Murk Mire Moor - however after setting down for lunch in a lovely spot by the beck we chose to head in the opposite direction over towards the railway line that the North York Moors steam train runs along. It was a steep climb up out of the valley and I was sweating like a 'navvie' by the time we reached the road - not a nice thought I know.
After crossing the road we headed over towards Two Howes Rigg, passing 'The Tarn' along the way and heading in the direction of the Standing Stones. We had planned to take the bridleway that meets this path in a northerly direction towards Thornhill Farm, however to say the path was very indistinct would be an understatement. In fact it was hard to find any path so we just ended up meandering for ages around the boggy moor in the rough direction of where we wanted to be. There was very little to see for about an hour, just brown heather and lots of mud and peat.
Eventually we came to the road and instead of heading down towards the railway line, we just took the road west in the direction of Goathland. As we reached the village we took the path down the back of the church and through the village back to the car-park - stopping on the way to look at the Ford Anglia that they use in Heartbeat, and also the one that was used in Harry Potter - not that I've ever seen the films so relied on the information on the window of the car.
The route we took back to Scarborough was a little longer, heading down to Pickering then back across to Scarborough. A quick turnaround back at the apartment and Donna took me 'on a date' and out for a curry. We went back to the same restaurant that we'd been to with Dave and Karen on Saturday, and the meal was just as good again. Then another hour and a half walking around Scarborough - where we discovered some great old buildings in the back-streets just yards from the sea-front...again a pity that I lost the photos. Never mind, no doubt we'll be back again soon...
