Clumber Park - 21st November 2011

Walk: 11:30am to 3:30pm - Around 4 miles

Recently we've had a re-organisation at work, which has resulted in me having to work some weekends going forward - something I've not done for about 10 years. I will also have to work until 8pm some weeks as the company I work for want a senior manager in our operations center covering the hours of 8am to 8pm 7-days per week. At first I wasn't happy about it, however it does mean that as my wife works Sunday's, that I will get more days off in the week to match her days off - so a good result. So what has that got to do with this blog you might ask, well it's a long way of saying that our walk today was on my first weekday off having worked on Sunday.

We decided that we'd just go for a relatively local ramble, and as Clumber Park is only about a 30 minute drive, and we hadn't been there for years we'd go and spend a few hours there. We paid our £5.50 to get into the main grounds - passing numerous cars on the way who park on verges on the outskirts to save them a few quid. I'm sure many of those people would be the first to complain if the place had to shut through lack of funds!

The main car-park was our destination, where after 'togging up' we set off towards the bridge which takes you over to the far side of the lake to enable us to walk around it and end back at the main buildings. The lake is actually bigger than you expect, so takes a good couple of hours walking slowly and stopping to take a few photos - plus reading the many signs that tell you about the area.

Towards the end of the walk we passed the beautiful church, and Donna commented on how good it would be to get married in such a place. Not sure if they do weddings there, but if they do it would be a fantastic venue. We'd build up a bit of an appetite, so headed for Barkers Restaurant, a walk of about 15 minutes from the main buildings. However, when we got there it was closed - if only there had been signs telling us before we set off walking. So, back to the main cafe - Donna had Apple & Parsnip soup, and I had a Wild Mushroom Risotto with shavings of Ewe's Milk Cheese - yummy. Overall a nice way to spend a few hours, and plenty of time when we got back home to chill out in preparation for the next day at work.
