Rushup Edge - 15th October 2011

Walk: 12:30 to 15:30 - 4.9 miles

It was too nice a day today to stay in the house, however I did want to watch the Wales v France semi-final of the Rugby World Cup so we planned a shortish walk in the afternoon. Unfortunately Wales lost 9-8 after playing three quarters of the game with 14 men having had their captain sent off - not the best way to decide a semi-final. So, just after 11am we set off to Derbyshire planning to go to Go Outdoors in Sheffield to hopefully pick up the Berghaus Paclite 3XL jacket that I'd see there the day before. We walked into the shop and the jacket was still there on the rail - I was a happy chappy. However my mood soon changed when I realised that although the hanger had a 3XL label on it - the jacket was actually a 2XL...I was gutted.

So off we went in the direction of Castleton, with lots of delay getting out of Sheffield as the roads were packed with people going about their daily business. The skies were bright blue with not a cloud to be seen. 30 minutes or so later when we parked up close to Mam Tor - it was disappointing to see lots of cloud when looking west, and a temperature of only 10c. I was so glad I'd taken a light jacket. That said, as the next few hours went by the clouds broke and there was plenty of blue sky.

We set off up Rushup Edge and were amazed at the amount of paragliders that were up there, the skies were filled with 'flocks' of them sailing overhead like migrating birds. It's always an amazing sight, and something that you would like to experience, if only vertigo wasn't a worry. The views over Edale was stunning as always, it's such a fertile looking area and looks beautiful when the sun is out.  As we came down the western side of the Edge we took the north-east track down the hill towards Chapel Gate - the track was cut about 6ft into the earth in many places, a well used bridleway it appears.

We met the road just south of Manor House Farm and then had the long trudge back up the hill and therefore had the advantage of walking along the road so good ground underfoot, however the disadvantage of it being a fairly busy lane so lots of pulling into the hedgerows. On the way up we were having a 'race' with a couple of cyclists were were struggling up the hill - we won. Looking back up towards the summit of Mam Tor it was packed with walkers and groups of people, many of whom we had seen earlier and looked like they were on outward bound courses.

A short walk back down the hill to the car and we set off back up for fish and chips and getting ready to watch Strictly Come Dancing - we do both enjoy it, a steady but rewarding afternoon and early evening.
