Scarborough - 20th September 2011

Walk: 11am to 4pm - 7 miles

Only a short update for today as we didn’t go anywhere new, and for the same reason I didn’t take too many photos. The weather was dry but the forecast was for rain late afternoon - which actually never materialised.

We decided today that we would just head into Scarborough and ‘walk the front’ – it doesn’t sound a lot but from where we parked at Scalby Mills to the Spa and back is actually 7 miles. Ok, it’s all flat, but with a few detours you add some ascent and also a little distance, but it’s a walk that we’ve done many times and always enjoy.

As a bit of a mid-walk treat my wife loves a visit to the Harbour Bar for one of their renown Knickerbocker Glory’s – however, we got there to find out that they are closed Tuesday and Wednesday apart from their out-sales window which just sells different varieties of cones. To make matters worse she asked for a ‘Banana Twist’ cone to be told that they were out of Banana ice-cream…oh dear. So a Strawberry Twist it was, and a big cone full of Chocolate, Strawberry and Vanilla ice-cream for me….just lovely.

It was great to see the Spa Complex now that it has been refurbished, I’m sure it doesn’t look a great deal different now to how it looked 50 years ago, although the shops outside selling plastic beach toys were maybe an uninteresting addition – unless you’re 5 of course! We had a couple of slices of toast and a drink at the café close to where the open lido was many years ago – then set off on the 3 ½ mile walk back to the car. A nice steady to “be beside the seaside” walk, and we hung around into the evening to take a few photos as the sun went down.
