Bridlington - 17th September 2011

Our last holiday in the Lake District in July now seems a distant memory, and this break came at a great time particularly for my wife who’s been working long hours away from home on a secondment. I was looking forward to the break, but if I’m being honest I haven’t had the hardest couple of months at work, but that’s another story.

We had a week’s holiday staying at Low Moor Cottages right on the eastern edge of the North York Moors, a couple of miles from Scalby just outside Scarborough. A great location as you have the moors going on for miles east and north of you, and you’re within 30 minutes drive of places like Scarborough, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay and Staithes – plus many other smaller coastal towns and villages.

We set off fairly early so we could have a few hours in Bridlington – I think we’ve only been there once before and it was so long ago I couldn’t remember anything about it. We arrived at 11am and had a walk from one end of the resort to the other, and ‘dined’ on a Subway meal – we never trust Fish & Chips at the coast unless it’s somewhere that’s been recommended.

Bridlington is quite a nice resort with plenty to do on the front for the ‘little ‘uns’ – lots of rides and enough slot machines to keep anyone happy. And for us ‘oldies’ (I can’t believe that I’ll be 48 next month) there’s a lovely promenade with loads of area’s to sit down and just take in the views. The harbour is very nice – and well used with plenty of boats moored there. It was interesting when we sat down at the end of the walk to watch some volunteers being trained on the beach in how to capture injured Seals – seeing someone pouncing on a water filled rubber Seal is not something you see every day.

Then on to the main reason we stopped off in Bridlington – the local derby rugby match between Bridlington and Scarborough. As I’d got to know quite a few people from the clubs – particularly Scarborough through the Yorkshire Rugby forum that I run, it was a chance to see a good game and also meet a few of my ‘cyber friends’ Unfortunately for the away team Scarborough it went from being a close game at half-time – 12-12 if I remember, to a comfortable 48-12 win for the home team.

We didn’t stay around after the game as we had to pay a visit to the local Tesco before driving the 20 miles or so up the coast to the cottage. We’d stayed here before but not in this particular cottage- and it didn’t disappoint. It was very clean and very homely – just as we like it. After unpacking we had a sit down for 10 minutes then headed off into Scarborough for a walk and a bite to eat – Pizza Hut looked quite enticing even though it was packed to the rafters, so we had to wait a little longer until we ate. A ‘cheesey bites’ Pizza to share and a salad bowl each (the latter being free now) certainly filled a hole. It was also lovely to walk around Scarborough when it was relatively quiet and looked lovely under the warm lights of the resort.

We arrived back to the cottage just after 10pm, and now time to wind down after a long day. Time for me to see if I could get a 3G/GPRS signal on my laptop – not a chance, although I didn’t expect it as I remember last year we struggled to even get a phone signal here. I think that it’s now that I made a mistake that was to haunt me for the next 6hrs or so.

My wife and I stopped drinking tea & coffee about 6 or 7 years ago, but as there was a jar of coffee in our welcome hamper, I decided to have two strong cups – surely it wouldn’t hurt. Well I eventually went to bed just before midnight, but not really in a tired state. And after spending the next 4hrs tossing and turning, with maybe a few minutes here and there, I eventually gave up just after 4am and got up to watch the Wales v Tonga rugby world cup game – oh, and I also typed up this review of the first day. At least I didn’t have to worry about my alarm getting me up for the England v Georgia rugby game…
