Walk: Who knows, aborted walk and all afternoon in Maryport

Well today ended up being an unusual one as we set off on a walk to Devoke Water, but ended up making a 70 mile round-trip to Maryport. A bit of a contrast...

Things had started well as we managed to park exactly where we needed to be, on the A595 near Dyke – a mile or so south of Muncaster Castle. We kitted ourselves up for what looked to be a straightforward walk to Devoke Water and back. However, within about a ½ mile of setting off we came to a junction with no sign-post. We could either head right which seemed to be the wrong path, or head left – but that took us through some trees which didn’t appear on the map.

Suffice to say, the right-hand turn which we took was incorrect and we ended up about ½ mile from where we needed to be, but as the area of the map was very ‘busy’ with field boundaries and clumps of vegetation we didn’t know that we were away from where we needed to be. To make matter worse, there was a stile in the corner of the field which made us think we were heading we needed to be, but when we got to it the stile was falling apart and we couldn’t find another way past. So, after mulling around for a while we decided to abort the walk and headed back to the car. We had actually walked 3 miles!

It was now almost mid-day so I just didn’t have the motivation to look for another walk, so we headed 35 miles up the coast to Maryport.

On route the road ‘degenerated’ into one of built up area’s and industrial area’s so we weren’t that hopeful that our destination would be particularly great, however once parked up on the harbour-side we really enjoyed our 2 or 3 hours walking around the marina and along the jetty’s. Not a big port but certainly well used - if not commercially. A nice ‘whippy’ ice-cream before we set off back and in the end a fairly enjoyable day….and another hot one which was nice.
