Hodbarrow Lagoon - 12th July 2011

Walk: 11am to 2pm - 4.5 miles

We planned a steady day today, so set off down the coast to Haverigg, where we parked up just behind the sand dunes and set off on a walk around Hodbarrow Lagoon. The lagoon used to be an iron mine many years ago, but was made into a lagoon by enclosing it with 3 sea barriers during its life as a mine.

It was nice flat walk around the lagoon, taking in the Hodbarrow Lighthouse around half-way around, and bumping into plenty of bird watchers enjoying the delights of the enclosed nature reserve which forms part of it. At Hodbarrow Point there is a lovely small beach with clear shallow waters – it looked like a couple of groups of school children were enjoying a mid-day jaunt at the ‘seaside’ Obviously no photos taken there!

At the end of the walk it was time for a cheese and onion Panini at the cafĂ© next to the car-park, before setting off back up the coast to the cottage. Our journey was delayed however as just outside of Haverigg we came around a corner on the small winding road and saw cows charging across a field – obviously we assumed it was feeding time. It wasn’t though, a car had just overturned in the road and it was that which had spooked the cows.

We pulled up and I phoned for the police and ambulance, as traffic slowly started backing up. My wife grabbed our first-aid kit and went to the assistance of the driver who was on his way back home after his shift at Sellafield. She brought him to our car where she strapped up his badly bleeding arm. After a short while a medic arrived and did further ‘repairs’ to his arm as we waited for the police and ambulance.

They didn’t arrive for around 45 minutes, in which time the medic joked that it was a good job there hadn’t been a murder – but I went one further without thinking and said that if there had been the man with the gun would have been long gone over the fields. My wife looked at me horrified – I then remembered about the shootings in West Cumbria a year or two ago – how embarrassed was I?

After getting back to the cottage we had a relaxing late afternoon and evening, wondering what tomorrow would bring.
