Burbage Rocks and Stanage Edge - 4th June 2011

Walk 10:15am to 3:30pm - 7.51 miles

Great to be back walking with my wife again today so plenty of banter and a few laughs thrown in, and a decent weather forecast also - what more could you want. Last night I was looking at a walk of around 10 miles, but as we didn't start until 10:15am, and we wanted to get to the Fox House Inn before the lunch-menu ended, we decided to cut some of the walk out and took a steady walk with plenty of stops.

When we left home the skies were clear blue, but we knew that clouds would bubble up later - well according to the weather forecast they would. And for once they were correct - however there were plenty of patches of blue sky particularly early in the walk, and not a rain droplet in sight so a great day for walking. A nice cooling breeze when the sun was out to ensure that you didn't get too warm. Almost perfect weather...

We parked near Fox House and set off on the path above Burbage Rocks seeing plenty of climbers as they made it to the top of the rocks, and plenty of safety helmets popping up as they clambered over the edge. We followed the path around to Upper Burbage Bridge where we stopped to have a sandwich and half of Pork Pie each - and of course plenty to drink.

A short stretch of road and then past Cam Height as we headed over to Stanage Edge - an area that we'd seen from afar on many occasions, but never actually visited. The area is just as popular with climbers as Burbage Rocks, and with such good weather the area was very busy. Plenty of other people around also taking advantage of a dry Saturday.

After a couple of miles we dropped down towards the road, and headed South-East along the road towards and around Overstones Farm, following the road in the direction of Upper Burbage Bridge, but then cutting across towards Higger Tor. From there we headed straight over Hathersage Moor and down to Burbage Bridge where we picked up the path alongside the road to take us back up to Fox House. I was really pleased with my boots - the first time I've walked in them with the insoles they came with, and the first time I'd finished a walk blister free.

It was 3:30pm as we got to the car, so finished in plenty of time to take advantage of the lunch-menu. However, to our dismay the Inn was very busy, the only free tables were reserved, so we sat outside and had a drink and then headed back home. Fish and Chips for us tonight...
