Dent to Ribblehead - 29th March 2011

Walk 10:15am to 5:30pm - 8.31 miles

The weather forecast for Wednesday onwards was for heavy rain so today was likely to be our last ‘decent’ day for walking. We were both really aching but wanted to ensure at least another day, so drove to Ribblehead and got the 10:06am train to Dent.

As we disembarked the train at Dent the first thing we noticed was that it was just starting to rain – something we were to experience for the next 4 or 5 hours! We took the steep walk down to Cowgill and then followed the Dales way along the road in the bottom of the valley. Lots of things to see, however the camera only briefly saw the light of day as it spent most of the time packed away in a waterproof bag as it just got wetter and wetter – not pouring down rain but incessant heavy drizzle.

We passed both Artergill and Den Head viaducts – a couple of sandwiches were the order of the day beneath Dent Head, then the slog up the hill to the right had turn over the moor.

Nothing really to see as we crossed the moor, just drizzle and mist. We met a couple of older guys as we crossed, they were doing the Dales Way  in sections. The last mile or so before the road wasn’t much of a path, hard to see how it could be classed as a Bridleway. We stopped for ‘lunch’ at the point that we met the B6255.

Instead of walking back along the road to Ribblehead, after a couple of hundred metres we came off the road looking for the Pack Horse Bridge that ‘One F’ had suggested. This detour lasted about 90 minutes as the paths were very poorly marked, but in the end we found it, and it was the little gem that ‘One F’ said it was – many thanks for the suggestion.

Heading back to the road, paths marked on the map but nothing of note on the ground so we ended up wandering around private land trying to find a way out, and I must apologise to the owner as we had to climb a gate and doing so brought  a few stones down from the dry-stone wall. It had been dry now for about 2hrs, but just as we got back to the car the sun broke through – typical!
